Dear Parents and Carers Here are some suggestions from your child’s teacher of activities to help you keep your children occupied during the day. Please remember that they are indeed only suggestions and we do not want you to feel pressured in any way to turn your home into a home school. Do what works for you and your family and let us worry about getting your children quickly back up to speed when everything returns to normal. If you do only one thing, it would be best to keep your child reading. Reading to them, listening to them read and talking about what’s been read will be hugely beneficial. Beyond that, do what is easy, stress free and comfortable for you and your family. English There are a wide range of suggested writing activities within your pack, which you can complete either on the notes/word app on your tablet or phone, or you could use the handwriting pen we gave you and write into the yellow books we sent with your work. If you aren’t a fan of the longer writing tasks, have a go at just a paragraph or so a day to keep your hands and imagination working. We expect everyone to complete writing once a day as it is an important skill that you will need when back at school. Once you have completed those, http://www.pobble365.com/ has some great pictures with ideas for story starters and other writing ideas. Don’t like the picture? Skip on to find one you like. Maths You know the drill. You have the maths revision guide with activities based on your previous learning (place value, calculation, algebra, fractions etc.) as well as areas we have not taught you but you may have learnt in year 5. Work your way through as much as possible. On top of this, it would be great for you to complete tasks on Mathletics as well as completing as many sessions as you can on Times Table Rockstars per week. Spelling We’d love you to log into Readiwriter on a regular basis, practising different spelling rules. You could also use the menu on the left of your screen to toggle between different spelling rules. The more you practise, the easier they will become. If you are unable to get onto it for now, you can have a go at these (see next page). Make sure you ask a parent to test you. They could also ask you to put them into sentences to check you understand the context in which the spellings should be used. Reading Reading is essential! Like we said in our last letter, reading will open up the world to you! You can read alone, read out loud, read to a sibling, facetime a friend and read to them… the ideas are endless. You could even mute the television and put on subtitles (Miss Williams sometimes needs these when Luna is playing too loudly and something important happens on the programme). However, if you don’t have anything much to read at home, try these audio books. David Walliams is releasing a new audio book daily for a month and we know that lots of you love his writing. We believe this is the correct link https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/ . Mrs Ridler is in the process of setting you all up with a scholastic account. You will then have free access to all of their online books and can take quizzes on them once you are finished – it’s similar to Accelerated Reader. Finally, you should all have logged on to Read Theory by now. It is a great activity to complete with an adult at home. In your next homework, we are planning some activities based on a new science unit – light. Alongside this, cast your mind back to what we have learnt so far about the Anglo-Saxons in history. We suggest that you start thinking about light (sources of light, how we see things) and think back through the learning we have done so far on the Anglo-Saxons. This website is good for a relatively simple overview http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/saxons.htm . They also have lots of information about many areas of the curriculum. Finally … Easter is coming up but how much do you really know about Easter except that it’s a good excuse to eat chocolate for breakfast. What can you find out about the Easter story for RE? Your job is to research the history behind Easter, a Christian occasion. You can present your learning however you wish – a cartoon strip, poster, story, fact booklet, a video made on your tablet. Make sure you stay inside and stay safe. Enjoy being able to spend time with your family and keep yourselves busy. We miss you and hope to see you soon, Miss Williams, Mrs Ridler and the rest of the year 6 team.
