Dear Parents and Carers Ms Vickery and Mrs Willis have worked together to come up with suggestions of activities for your child as they play and learn at home. Please remember that these are just suggestions and we don’t want you to feel pressured into turning your home into a home school. Please only do what works for you and your family. It would be great if you could read regularly with your child. Reading to them, listening to them read and talking about what’s been read is hugely beneficial. Beyond that please do what is easy, stress free and comfortable for you and your family. Reading We encourage you to read every day for 20 minutes with your child. • Read books together - talk about the story, characters and pictures. Upload a video of your child reading to Tapestry, if you can, for their teacher to see. • If you have read the school reading books that were sent home, you could access books similar books here https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/ • CBeebies Radio is a great place to find stories to listen to (plus music and information shows) https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/radio Download the free BBC Sounds app to listen to the station on phones or tablets. • Learning nursery rhymes is a great way to help early reading skills – this site has lots that you can share and sing along with https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-songs-index/zhwdgwx Writing • Help your child to use the name card in their home learning pack to practise writing their first name and surname. Remind them to pinch their pencil near the tip. • Encourage your child to practise letter formation to support their handwriting. This is a link to Get Squiggling, which has a fun videos showing how to form each letter of the alphabet https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLex2rFvT0W9aZZAi-ffiGK05rWBiOrIBL • Remember children can use the writing book in the home learning pack to practise writing. If you have a garden, children can also practise letter formation outdoors with chalks, paint brushes with water and using washing up bottles filled with water. Make big loops, lines and spiral patterns – it will help improve gross and fine motor control which are really important for handwriting skills. Phonics Learn these fun songs to help read and write tricky ‘Train Your Brain’ words (words you can’t sound out easily). Phase 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMyssfAUx0 Phase 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R087lYrRpgY Phase 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NOzgR1ANc4 Maths It would be brilliant if you could… • Have a go at the activities on your Mathletics account (log in details in your home learning pack). • Take a look at White Rose Maths Supertato maths activities - https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/ This is a story that is well known to all the children ( the story is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rze89HB9u8g ) and there are lots of fun maths activity suggestions to go with it. If you are having trouble accessing your Tapestry account or need to reset your password, please email svickery@ecfschools.org.uk

After the Easter holidays we will upload more activities and ideas for home learning. So keep an eye on the school website, Facebook page and Tapestry, We have uploaded one of our favourite stories for you to enjoy at home onto Tapestry. We hope you’re all staying safe and well at home. We hope you have found your home learning packs useful. As we can’t be in class, we’d like you to choose as few or as many of this week’s activities to enjoy learning at home and as we wanted to take the pressure off the adults at home as much as possible, so we’ve labelled our activities with should and could to help. The ‘shoulds’ are the ones we think are a bit more important. English We are going to be finishing off our learning about fairy tales , with a specific focus on ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Your child’s tasks this week are: • Should – Remind themselves of the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Here is a video that may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLR2pLUsl-Y • Could – Think about what you saw in the video – can you draw a story map about the story and the order it happened? What did the pigs use to build the houses? What did the Big Bad Wolf do to each one? How did the story end? • Should – Using what you have learned from the videos and any further understanding of the story; have a go at innovating (changing) the characters to make the story your own. For example: Three Little Pigs may become Three Fluffy Sheep OR The Big Bad Wolf may become the Huge Scary Fox. • Could – Can you make a story map for your story using pictures and actions to act it out? • Should – Once you have innovated your story, have a go at writing the whole story out neatly using your new characters. Don’t forget to use capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and the soundmat provided to spell accurately. • Could - Once you have finished your story, can you draw each character and their houses and describe them, using adjectives. For example: The small, fluffy sheep. The strong, brick house. Mr Panter and Mr Ellis are excited to hear them all when we are all back! Spelling We use the National Curriculum year 1 and 2 spelling list for children to practice. Your child’s tasks this week are to: • Should – Use the sets included in the pack, or of course the children’s spelling books (which have the most up to date spellings in) to practice spelling the words • Could – Can you use the spellings you have practiced in a sentence? Maths We are going to be learning about multiplication and division in Maths. We can use multiplication and division to make groups, to share and to make doubles. Your child’s tasks for this week are to: • Should – Complete mathletics (children have logins in packs) tasks which have been set on multiplication and division • Could – Take the test at the end to assess understanding Science In science we have been looking at everyday materials such as: wood, metal, plastic, glass and fabric. You should have found a booklet about this topic within your home-learning packs. Your child’s learning tasks this week are: • Should – Complete the everyday materials booklet including the final assessment, to round off our learning on this topic. • Could – Conduct an experiment regarding each of the everyday materials and how they react in water (i.e. weather the float/sink AND how waterproof they are. For example: make predictions about the materials reaction to water and compare to the actual outcome. Geography In Geography we are going to be exploring the country of Egypt, looking at what is there, where it is on a map and comparing the weather in Egypt to here, in England. Your child’s learning tasks this week are: • Should – Have a look at a map, or use google earth. Where is Egypt on the map? What continent is it in? What other countries are near Egypt? Make a fact page in your books. https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/ • Could – Research the weather in Egypt and compare it to the UK. What is different? Is it hot all the time? Does it rain? How hot can it get? Why does it get hot? https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/360630 https://www.oddizzi.com/teachers/explore-the-world/country-close-up/egypt/climate-3/ Art As we are learning about fairy tales , in Art, we will be looking at and drawing some of the characters or settings from our favourite fairy tale. Your child’s task this week is to: • Should – Pick their favourite fairy tale character and create a piece of art around them. This can be a drawing, painting, collage, sculpture etc. • Could – Create a fictional setting for this character e.g. Little Red Riding Hood – The deep, dark forest.

Spelling We use the National Curriculum (document online) to set spellings for year 3/4 to practice. They are also at the end of this document. If you have a spelling list in your homework book, practice the words by writing them out three times. Then try writing the words into a sentence. Or log on to Readiwriter. You can access this through https://login.readiwriter.com/ (Log in codes are the same as Mathletics). Writing Create a project on ‘Who Inspires me?’ Research a famous (or interesting) person of your choice. The person could be anyone who you are ‘inspired’ by, from a favourite sports person like David Weir (Famous Paralympic wheelchair athlete) to someone who has achieved something amazing in history. How about Florence Nightingale ( very famous nurse!) or Amy Johnson (the first female pilot to fly solo) or Cleopatra (strong female Egyptian ruler). Dear Parents and Carers Here are some suggestions from your child’s teacher of activities to help you keep your children occupied during the day. Please remember that they are indeed only suggestions and we do not want you to feel pressured in any way to turn your home into a home school. Do what works for you and your family and let us worry about getting your children quickly back up to speed when everything returns to normal. If you do only one thing, it would be best to keep your child reading. Reading to them, listening to them read and talking about what’s been read will be hugely beneficial. Beyond that, do what is easy, stress free and comfortable for you and your family. Reading We encourage you to read every day for 20 minutes to an adult at home. • Take time to share a book together (you can read/ listen to an audiobook or watch a story online together). Amazon have many free audiobooks that can be accessed through www.amazon.co.uk/Audiobooks • In the absence of reading books, you could access books similar to the ones you bring home www.oxfordowl.co.uk • Find the definitions of words that are unfamiliar- you could use a dictionary or a google search. Writing Here are 2 versions of the Princess and Pea by Hans Christian Anderson you can watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waw0U9tKpW0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPytbUghpJM This week you could… • Write your own version of the story ( The Teacher and the Gherkin?) • Write a playscript of the story (make your own props out of anything you’ve got lying about the house) • Write diary entries as the characters in the story ( imagine how the characters might be feeling after different events take place in the story) Spelling If you have the spelling words sent home in your pack you could… • practice them and write them in sentences. • Use the internet or a dictionary to find the meanings of the ones you don’t know • Use them to make your own word games, word searches, or cross words Maths It would be brilliant if you could… • Practice your times tables every day. These can be practised by writing them by hand, or by using Times Table Rockstars. https://play.ttrockstars.com/ • Or play hit the button on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ Other You could.. • Choose an activity from your Ancient Egypt activity sheet ( or make up your own!) • Use this link to help you draw a picture of an Egyptian Mummy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GvQBn6aqOo • Use this link to make different animals by tracing your hand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUn64SFeY9w

Hi Year 6! We still miss you greatly and are keeping up to date with your Mathletics/ Read Theory etc. We hope that you had a lovely Easter and are looking after all your family members at home. Writing We had been studying Brave Irene before the Easter and writing our own overcoming obstacle narratives. Now you could look at a different text type: A biography. A biography tells you facts about a person’s life (usually a famous person). You could: • Have a look at some of the biographies here: https://www.literacywagoll.com/biographies.html • Highlight the layout features used by the writers that you can see are important to biographies e.g. sub-headings/sections. Highlight the grammatical techniques e.g relative clauses: Usain Bolt, who is a famous athlete. • Choose a person who you are interested in the life of to research online. Find out the key information about them such as their birth date, personal life and decide what your sections will be for writing a biography on them. • Write a biography for your chosen person in the same style as the ones you have looked at in your yellow book. Maybe create a plan before you write to make sure you’re clear about how you want to lay it all out AND decide how you could publish it- record it as a video? Spelling If you want to practise: They are on Readiwriter to practise and you could get someone at home to test you on Friday achieve belief believe brief chief field fiend fiery friend grief lie mischief pie piece pier relief review shield Reading We encourage you to read every day for 20 minutes to an adult at home. • You could log onto your Read theory ( www.readtheory.org ) and continue working on your levels. It’s a brilliant way to access comprehension. • In the absence of reading books, you could access books similar to the ones you bring home www.oxfordowl.co.uk Science - Light You could: • Work out which things in your house are sources of light. A source of light is anything that makes light, whether natural and artificial. Natural light sources include the Sun and stars. Artificial light sources include lamp posts and televisions. Many objects simply reflect light from a light source. Organise the light in your house into Natural Light, Man-made light and Not a light source. Maths You could: • Log on to www.mathletics.com and complete the activities set. Those of you who have finished them all we’ve reset you new ones. • Log onto www.ttrockstars.com and see if you can improve your times tables • Use a mug (it holds usually 350ml of liquid) see if you can estimate the volume of different containers in your house and then check if you’re right by using a mug to measure. See if you can remember how to convert between ml and L(hint: 1 L=1000ml). • Alongside the usual maths activities we gave set you, White Rose have created online lessons for home learning. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ There is year 6 work on there but other year groups too if year 6 is a bit tricky without a teacher to help out. Each lesson has a video and an activity and there are currently 2 weeks worth of activities to have a go at (parents, the answers are there too so you can go through their work when their done or go through the activity together then check the answers together too).

Dear Parents and Carers Here are some suggestions from your child’s teacher of activities to help you keep your children occupied during the day. Please remember that they are indeed only suggestions and we do not want you to feel pressured in any way to turn your home into a home school. If you do only one thing, it would be best to keep your child reading. Reading to them, listening to them read and talking about what’s been read will be hugely beneficial. Beyond that, do what is easy, stress free and comfortable for you and your family. English There are a wide range of suggested writing activities within your pack, which you can complete either on the notes/word app on your tablet or phone, or you could use the handwriting pen we gave you and write into the yellow books we sent with your work. If you aren’t a fan of the longer writing tasks, have a go at just a paragraph or so a day to keep your hands and imagination working. We expect everyone to complete writing once a day as it is an important skill that you will need when back at school. Once you have completed those, http://www.pobble365.com/ has some great pictures with ideas for story starters and other writing ideas. Don’t like the picture? Skip on to find one you like. Maths You know the drill. You have the maths revision guide with activities based on your previous learning (place value, calculation, algebra, fractions etc.) as well as areas we have not taught you but you may have learnt in year 5. Work your way through as much as possible. On top of this, it would be great for you to complete tasks on Mathletics as well as completing as many sessions as you can on Times Table Rockstars per week. Spelling We’d love you to log into Readiwriter on a regular basis, practising different spelling rules. You could also use the menu on the left of your screen to toggle between different spelling rules. The more you practise, the easier they will become. If you are unable to get onto it for now, you can have a go at these (see next page). Make sure you ask a parent to test you. They could also ask you to put them into sentences to check you understand the context in which the spellings should be used. Reading Reading is essential! Like we said in our last letter, reading will open up the world to you! You can read alone, read out loud, read to a sibling, facetime a friend and read to them… the ideas are endless. You could even mute the television and put on subtitles (Miss Williams sometimes needs these when Luna is playing too loudly and something important happens on the programme). However, if you don’t have anything much to read at home, try these audio books. David Walliams is releasing a new audio book daily for a month and we know that lots of you love his writing. We believe this is the correct link https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/ . Mrs Ridler is in the process of setting you all up with a scholastic account. You will then have free access to all of their online books and can take quizzes on them once you are finished – it’s similar to Accelerated Reader. Finally, you should all have logged on to Read Theory by now. It is a great activity to complete with an adult at home. In your next homework, we are planning some activities based on a new science unit – light. Alongside this, cast your mind back to what we have learnt so far about the Anglo-Saxons in history. We suggest that you start thinking about light (sources of light, how we see things) and think back through the learning we have done so far on the Anglo-Saxons. This website is good for a relatively simple overview http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/saxons.htm . They also have lots of information about many areas of the curriculum. Finally … Easter is coming up but how much do you really know about Easter except that it’s a good excuse to eat chocolate for breakfast. What can you find out about the Easter story for RE? Your job is to research the history behind Easter, a Christian occasion. You can present your learning however you wish – a cartoon strip, poster, story, fact booklet, a video made on your tablet. Make sure you stay inside and stay safe. Enjoy being able to spend time with your family and keep yourselves busy. We miss you and hope to see you soon, Miss Williams, Mrs Ridler and the rest of the year 6 team.
