Music

Music at Wynstream

At Wynstream, we recognise the important role that music plays in school life for:

  • our enjoyment and pleasure,
  • our community cohesion,
  • our academic achievements.

We have a range of exciting musical opportunities for our pupils and believe that music should be accessible to all. We offer the following sessions weekly:

  • Whole School Singing Assembly
  • Choir (Years 3-6)
  • Guitar tuition
  • Brass Tuition

Alongside the National Music curriculum teaching, we aim to meet the objectives of The Model Music Curriculum as follows:

Listening

We regularly welcome visiting musicians to our school. In the past, we have been treated to live music performances from the Salvation Army Band, the Exeter School Swunk Band, a folk band, Exeter Cathedral Choristers and a local drummer. Alongside this, we have taken children to watch the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the English Touring Opera.

Performing

Our school choir perform regularly at school events and have also performed at Exeter Cathedral and the Devon County Show amongst other community events. In the summer term, Year 6s have the opportunity to learn samba drumming from a professional musician and then perform live for our school and parents. All students get the opportunity to perform live at Christmas.

Composing

In 2023/2024, our Year 5’s took part in the English National Opera’s ‘Finish This’ composition programme. One of the class entries was turned into an animation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gkpT5nVnXY We plan on taking part in this in the future also.

If you are a professional musician looking to perform to a very receptive and interested audience then we would love to hear from you.

Singing

Alongside singing opportunities within the curriculum, we have a non-auditioned choir made up of approximately 40 children across Years 3-6.

Wynstream Music Centre

What is it?

Wynstream Music Centre is funded by Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs, in partnership with Wynstream Primary School and BandStars CIC. It offers an opportunity for Primary-aged children to explore music, with a variety of options available.

This year (2023/2024), the options are singing in the choir, learning a brass instrument in a band (BandStars Brass Band – complete beginners welcome), or guitar club – or a mixture!

Hosted at Wynstream Primary School on Monday afternoons during term time, the centre has the following timetable:

3:30-4:15pm  BandStars (Brass Band) 1

3:30-4:15pm  Choir

3:30-4:15pm  Guitar Club (3:1 lessons)

4:15-5:00pm  BandStars (Brass Band) 2

Instruments are available to hire at little or no cost, and the centre is designed to ensure equal access to the musical opportunities, regardless of financial circumstances. You can read more about what the music centre offers here:
