As part of the celebration of the PL Primary Stars project, Devon Schools FA teamed up with the Community Trusts of Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United to deliver a Futsal event aimed at giving an opportunity for students to experience the increasingly popular sport.
The event this year, held at Paignton Community and Sports Academy, consisted of nine teams split into two groups; Galmpton (2), Woodford (2), Withycombe, Whipton Barton, Whitleigh, Wynstream and Curledge Street.
Group A | Points | |
1 | Galmpton United | 12 |
2 | Woodford City | 7 |
3 | Whipton Barton | 4 |
4 | Whitleigh | 3 |
5 | Withycombe | 3 |
Group B | Points | |
1 | Wynstream | 7 |
2 | Curledge Street | 4 |
3 | Woodford United | 3 |
4 | Galmpton City | 1 |
Galmpton United were the runaway winners in Group A, winning all four fixtures, whilst Woodford City claimed runners-up spot. Wynstream qualified for the semi-finals of the event after winning the other group by achieving two wins and one draw, while Curledge Street took second position.
Form from the group stages would have suggested that Galmpton United look set to continue their dominance, but a fantastic display by Curledge Street earned them a place in the final after a 2-1 victory after extra-time. In the other semi-final, extra-time was also needed to separate the two sides with Group B winners Wynstream beating Woodford City 3-2.
The final was a very tight encounter with both Curledge Street and Wynstream having opportunities to seal the victory. Neither side managed to take any chances during normal time, but Curledge Street claimed the trophy with a goal in extra-time to win the PL Primary Stars Futsal Cup.
